AI is changing the workplace. And with change comes anxiety.
As business leaders, it’s our duty to prioritise our team’s well-being.
Recent insights from the American Psychological Association’s 2023 Work in America survey highlight some critical issues we need to address head-on to create a supportive and thriving work environment.
AI Anxiety
The survey reveals that 38% of workers worry AI might make their job duties obsolete. (This number sounds low to me, but the survey data is from last year.)
This anxiety impacts mental health with 51% of those concerned about AI reporting negative effects.
Additionally, 66% of these workers believe their employers perceive the workplace as healthier than it actually is.
That means they think business leaders like you and I aren’t seeing the issue.
Job security remains a significant concern, with 46% of those worried about AI planning to look for new employment.
This should be a wake-up call for all business owners and leadership.
Here’s how we can address these concerns and support our team:
Honest, Transparent Communication
We must keep our team informed about AI’s impact. Regular updates reduce fear and build trust. Hold monthly town halls or create internal forums e.g. Slack channels for discussion.
Inclusive Decision-Making
Involving employees in AI decisions is crucial, reducing anxiety and boosts engagement. Form committees with representatives from each department. Host focus groups for diverse input.
Focused Training and AI Literacy Upskilling
Investing in training programmes is essential. It boosts morale, confidence and prepares our team for future roles. Partner with online learning platforms or organise in-house training sessions.
Mental Health Support
We need to offer robust mental health resources, including counselling and stress management workshops.
Career Pathing and Development
It’s vital to show clear career paths within your organisation, and this isn’t easy when we don’t know the impact of AI ye. Create personalised development plans. Highlight success stories of employees adapting to AI.
What we’re trying to do is reduce anxiety, and improve morale and, yes, even productivity by making sure our team feels supported and valued.
